Living Like Jesus

When Jesus walked the earth, He lived a life like no one before. He was a leader, spoke against injustice, stood up to power, always spoke truth and loved always. He taught Truth and changed the world forever.

So when the Bible tells us to live a life like His, it’s intimidating. How do we do that?

In Numbers 21, the Israelites had turned away from God and found themselves in real trouble. Poisonous snakes spread through the camp. Desperate, the people cried out to Moses for help.

God told Moses to make an image of a serpent and raise it high on a pole. Anyone who fixed their eyes on that pole would be okay.

The people had to turn their attention away from their pain and fear and fix their gaze on God’s promises. They had to remember who God was and what He had done for them.

This story points us directly to Christ. In John 3:16, we find one of the most well-known verses in all of Scripture:

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”

Just before that familiar verse, Jesus says this:

John 3:14–15

“As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life.”

Jesus is telling us that He is the fulfillment of what Moses raised up in the wilderness. Just as the Israelites fixed their eyes on the raised serpent, we live by fixing our eyes on Christ.

As long as our eyes are on Him, our path is steady and sure. It’s when we look away from Him—when we focus on our fears, failures or circumstances—that we begin to drift and wander in our faith.

So how do we live a life like Jesus lived?

We keep our eyes on Him.

Walking in His footsteps and follow His example allows Him to guide us and lead us.

Hebrews 12:1–2

“…let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith…”

Keep your eyes on Jesus, and your walk with God will be sure and certain.
