Jesus The Light (by David Peterson at The Rock Of Jesus Church)
After a skirmish with temple zealots, Jesus passes by a blind man. His disciples asked Him if this blind man, or his parents, sinned to cause his loss of sight. Jesus responds in John 9:37; “It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was so that the works of God might be displayed in him. We must carry out the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world.” When He had said this, He spit on the ground, and made mud from the saliva, and applied the mud to his eyes and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he left and washed, and came back seeing.”
Jesus clarifies that a person’s sin did not cause this man’s blindness but the sovereignty of God has a purpose in all lives. Jesus claims to be the “Light of the world”, both in a spiritual sense but also in a physical sense as He gave the blind man his sight after he washed the mud from his eyes. Jesus is “the Light that shines in darkness” (John 1:5), and He refers to Himself as holy, pure, and truthful.
South African Pastor Andrew Murray wrote; “May not a single moment of my life be spent outside the light, love and joy of God’s presence and not a moment without the entire surrender of myself as a vessel for Him to fill full of His Spirit and His love.” Murray knew that the light of Christ is to be extremely sought after.
J.V. Combs penned the hymn “Jesus, the Light of the World” and here is the poignant refrain;
We’ll walk in the light, beautiful light,
Come where the dew-drops of mercy are bright;
Shine all around us by day and by night,
Jesus, the Light of the world.
Combs expresses a familiar sentiment among Christians to crave the light of Jesus.
Let us pray: Dear Jesus, may we always want, desire, and yearn to walk in your holy light and seek the pristine virtues that you represent. Amen.
