How Firm A Foundation
"How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in His excellent word!
What more can He say than to you He hath said—
To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?"
If you are as old as I am, you may recognize these words as coming from a great hymn of the church, "How Firm A Foundation." The lyrics were written over 200 years ago by Robert Keen.
Our foundation - the foundation of the church - is laid "In His excellent Word." I love this. Our true foundation is God's very Word.
What we read in God's Word is where we make our stand. It defines our beliefs and it is the line that we draw when we are pushed by the world. This is never more clear than when we watch politicians and legislators make a farce of our beliefs by making laws and decisions based on their own personal feelings and emotions.
Those are not reliable things. They change from person to person, from generation to generation. Our foundation can only be scripture alone.
Scripture is God's Word and it is True and it never changes. God's Word is not True because we believe it; His Word is True because God has spoken it.
The infinite, eternal, sovereign God of the universe - Who does not change, Who is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow, Who speaks and it is so - has spoken ... and it is so. It is so today, it was so yesterday and it will be so tomorrow. Forever more it is true. His Word may not be altered or changed.
This is how Jesus spoke about the Word of God:
Luke 16:17
"But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one stroke of a letter of the Law to fail."
Matthew 24:35
"Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away."
The Word of God is our foundation. We have built upon it, we stand upon it and we will always have His Word to lead us and guide us. Don't neglect the great gift that God has given to you.
