God Uses the Unlikely

One of the most incredible things about God is the kind of people He chooses to use. Again and again, Scripture shows us that God chooses people the world would overlook to make one lesson unmistakably clear:

“Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit.” (Zechariah 4:6)

Moses didn’t think he was qualified. When God called him, he immediately pointed out his weakness: “Please, Lord, I have never been eloquent” (Exodus 4:10). God knew Moses. He knew his limitations long before He ever called Moses. He didn’t need Moses to be strong enough. He needed Moses to trust Him.

Gideon didn’t look like a mighty warrior. He described his family as “the least in Manasseh” and himself as the youngest in his father’s house (Judges 6:15). David was youngest son—out tending the sheep—who nobody thought needed to be notified when Samuel came looking for a king. The disciples were ordinary fishermen and others without any impressive credentials.

And then there was Paul.

Paul learned that God’s power is not diminished by our weakness. He heard Christ say, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

We tend to look at what we lack and assume God can’t use us. We know our limitations—our past, our age, our abilities or our lack of experience—and say that someone else would be better suited for the task.

But God is not limited by what we lack.

In fact, God sometimes chooses people who appear inadequate precisely so that when the work is accomplished, everyone can see that the power came from Him.

The world says, “You need to be strong enough.” God says, “My strength is enough.”

The world says, “You need to have the right qualifications.” God says, “Trust Me.”

The world looks at ability. God looks at availability.

So don’t write yourself off because you don’t feel like the obvious choice. God has a way of taking the mist unlikely people and doing extraordinary things through them.

Not by your strength, but by His Spirit.

That is our confidence.

Not our strength.

Not our ability.

Not our qualifications.

His Spirit. His power. His grace.
