God Is Bigger Than That

Take some time this weekend and read the Gospel of John. It should only take you about an hour or so. Read that book and then tell me that it doesn't change your idea of who God is.

God Is Bigger Than That

One of the great thrills of reading the Bible is discovering the Jesus of the Gospels, (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). Those are the written records of what Jesus did and said when He was on this earth.

It is glaringly obvious to anyone who reads the them that Jesus is not going to fit inside anyone's “box” of what God is like! The Gospels are eyewitness accounts of Jesus constantly doing things in a way that challenges our idea of who and what God is.

When Jesus and His disciples had to cross the Sea of Galilee, Jesus sent the them ahead, in a boat, while He stayed behind to pray. Later that night, He crossed the sea by walking past their boat on top of the water!

In another incident on the same sea, Jesus was sleeping in the boat while a storm arose. While the Disciples fretted and prayed, Jesus awoke, stood up and told the storm to be quiet.

It did.

What “box” do you put that in? While other people walked past a blind man, Jesus stopped and gave him his sight back. When a rich man came to Jesus for advice, Jesus turned him away and told him to give his money to someone else. How do you process that when you have a preconceived idea of how God should respond?

All the people around Jesus constantly asked, "Who is this?" Their minds were always trying to put Him into boxes but He kept showing them that their box was too small.

It will change your view of Him, yet you will notice that He never actually changes. It’s the people around Him who change. They have their eyes opened to see who - or what - was actually standing in front of them. They needed a bigger box every time it happened.

Eventually, they ran out of boxes and did what I learned to do. I keep Jesus unboxed and I let Him be God in my life. You can’t keep God in a box. If He fit He wouldn’t be God, would He?

Ephesians 3:20-21

"Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think ... to Him be the glory ... Amen."
