First Things (by Tim Klink of Prison Discipleship Ministry)

Matthew 6:33

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

The longer I live, the more I am aware of life’s shortness. As I look back I realize how little seeking the Kingdom of God has taken place, and how much seeking my own will has taken precedent. We not only want to do what we wish, and go where we wish, but when we look back we realize that direction has consumed most of our life. Except for the grace of God through Jesus Christ, our lives would be miserable failures.

In this verse, Jesus is teaching us that true success in this life is not to see how much wealth we can gain, or how much fun we can have, but to seek God’s will in all things, and then choose to follow it. Of course, the righteousness of God can never be fully obtained by sinful man, but because of the sacrifice of Jesus for our sin we have the indwelling Holy Spirit of God to guide us in that direction.

Seeking something means that you have not completely found it, otherwise, you would not still be seeking. When we set the direction of our life to finding God’s kingdom, and His righteousness, He will reveal it to us, as well as empower us to be able to follow it. There will be times of failure, but through God’s grace, those times will be turned into times of building our faith. When failure comes, Satan will be quick to tell us that we should just quit, and enjoy life. One on his lies is that “we only go around once, so get as much as we can.” The falseness in that is that we don’t just live this life. There is an entire eternity waiting for us where we will be accountable for what we have done with Jesus by either seeking Him or ignoring Him.

When we seek God’s kingdom first, He has promised that the things we were seeking on our own will be added. However, the joy and peace we were seeking will have a different look because it will be God’s. What is the direction of your life today? What place does God actually have?
