Finding The Real Jesus - The Son Of Man

“...and in the middle of the lampstands I saw one like a Son of Man.” (Revelation 1:13)

In Revelation 1, John relates a vision that he had of Jesus. As he describes his amazing encounter, our eyes are opened up to exactly who Jesus is. The first thing that John tells us about His appearance is that He was “Like a Son of Man.”

The term is not new. For centuries the people of God had referred to this Son of Man. Ezekiel and Daniel mention Him about 100 times. The book of Psalms, written a thousand years before John’s vision, states:

Psalms 80:17

“Let Your hand be upon the man of Your right hand, upon the Son of Man whom You made strong for Yourself.”

This name, the Son of Man, was one of Jesus’ favorite names for Himself. It tells us about the uniqueness of Jesus. Son of Man isn’t just another human being. This name has very deep meaning for the followers of God. The Son of Man is the Messiah. He is the One Who Saves. It is by Him that all mankind is restored to God. That is a very big deal!

Why use this specific name? It drives home a point. The savior of the human race could only be God Himself. When the Bible calls Jesus the Son of Man, it is saying that this is God but He has become one of us. He is a divine being but He became a man who had a birth, a childhood and a real life with a real body just like us.

The Son of Man earned His place as the Head of all mankind by “emptying Himself”, living a human life, allowing Himself to undergo temptation without failing, and by submitting to a death on a cross for you and me. He then conquered death by raising Himself from the dead and ascending to heaven.

The Son of Man has earned our praise and glory for He alone was able to save us from our sins. When John mentions Jesus in this way, it is intended to elicit only one thing: worship.

The Son of Man is an unmistakable title of great honor within the church. It represents God Himself yet, also, the repentant men and women whom He rescued from death. It is Christ in all of His glory in His place as the Head of His church.

Does John have your attention yet? Wait until you read what he saw next!

Matthew 25:31

“But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne.”
