Finding The Real Jesus - Face To Face
Throughout the New Testament people struggled to understand exactly who Jesus was. John the Baptist had to send people to ask Him. King Herod questioned Him face to face. The religious leaders spied on Him and interrogated Jesus and those who were close to Him.
It seems like no one really knew. Even the disciples never really figured it out until after He ascended to heaven. In fact, when Jesus calmed the sea they cowered in the back of the boat and wondered about Him out loud.
Mark 4:41
“They became very much afraid and said to one another, ‘Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?’”
The Gospels do a pretty great job of telling us who Jesus was but it was long towards the end of the Apostle John’s life that he really started to get it. In the book of Revelation, John describes an encounter that he had with Jesus that completely unnerved him. He saw a vision of the glorified Christ. That vision physically overwhelmed John so much that he fell on his face “like a dead man.”
Here is his account of that vision. I will take the next several days to look at what he saw in the hope of helping each of us understand the amazingly beautiful, and yet terrifying, “real” Jesus. Each physical attribute that John describes will reveal to us a different element in the true character of our Lord.
Buckle in, because this series will astound you and bring you face to face with who it is that we worship.
Revelation 1:12-16
“Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands; and in the middle of the lampstands I saw one like a son of man, clothed in a robe reaching to the feet, and girded across His chest with a golden sash. His head and His hair were white like white wool, like snow; and His eyes were like a flame of fire. His feet were like burnished bronze, when it has been made to glow in a furnace, and His voice was like the sound of many waters. In His right hand He held seven stars, and out of His mouth came a sharp two-edged sword; and His face was like the sun shining in its strength.”
