Finding God … Again

This is how we grow in faith. He is always there, regardless of how we feel, never changing, never moving, just waiting for us to turn to Him again.

Finding God … Again

It’s tough for believers when we go through a spiritual dry spell. We all go through moments in our lives when God seems distant. Don't feel alone in this. We all go through it.

It’s the product of having a physical body in a material world. We are physical beings living lives based on spiritual principles. Even some of the great men and women of the Bible went through it. King David wrote:

Psalms 13:1-3

"How long, O Lord? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me? How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart all the day?"

There were times when David felt like God was far away and hard to find. So, how did he snap out of it?

Prayer.

David poured out his heart to God in prayer. He never stopped believing even though he had questions. He knew God would always be there waiting to continue building their relationship. David understood that God's presence is not a feeling or an emotion. You can't have a relationship with an emotion. That requires a real person.

When we are driven by our emotions and feelings, our relationships suffer, taking us through peaks and valleys, highs and lows that mess with our minds and hearts. Feelings and emotions can’t survive that but a relationship with a person can.

Fortunately, God knows this about us. After all, He created us. He knows cares so He works patiently with us, revealing more of Himself to us while we figure things out.

Psalms 145:18

“The LORD is near to all who call upon Him, To all who call upon Him in truth.”

This is how we grow in faith. He is always there, regardless of how we feel, never changing, never moving, just waiting for us to turn to Him again. James tells us how to find Him when He seems far away:

James 4:8

"Draw near to God and He will draw near to you."

In other words, just start walking towards Him. That means praying, reading your Bible and going to church.

He is right there, waiting to show you how real and faithful He is. Open your eyes and look for Him and you will find Him. He may not look like you thought and His voice might be different than you expected, but He is there ... always.
