In fact, some of the deepest evidence of God’s goodness is discovered not when He gives us what we want, but when He sustains us through what we would never have chosen. The valley, as it turns out, became the place where David came to understand God’s goodness the deepest.
Joseph learned this lesson as well. Betrayed by his own brothers, falsely accused and imprisoned for ten years, he never lost sight of God’s goodness. Looking back after years of betrayal and suffering, he could tell his brothers, “You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good” (Genesis 50:20). Joseph wasn’t wrong. He discovered that God’s goodness was greater than what had been done to him.
That is the goodness David is trusting. It’s a goodness that pursues him rather than waiting for him to find it. It’s a goodness that remains when circumstances change.
And it is a goodness that ultimately works toward God’s purposes even when we don’t yet understand what He is doing.
A child doesn’t always understand why a parent says no. From their perspective, they feel disappointment or even cruelty. But the parent sees things from a different perspective.
We see the moment but God sees the whole story. His goodness is not limited by what we can perceive and understand. That’s why one of the greatest promises of the Bible is this verse found in Romans:
Romans 8:28
“And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”
You may be living through something today that you can’t call good. You don’t have to pretend otherwise. Scripture never asks us to call evil good or suffering pleasant. But you can hold onto something David knew: God is still good. His character has not changed because your circumstances have.
The Shepherd who is good in the green pasture is the same Shepherd who is good in the valley. And because His goodness is part of who He is, you can trust that goodness will continue to pursue you wherever He leads.
