Day 41 – Presence
Psalm 23:5 — “…in the presence of my enemies.”
David describes a prepared table in a valley where his enemies are still standing nearby. Who sits down to enjoy a meal while surrounded by enemies?
That’s exactly the point.
If we trace this idea through Scripture, we notice a pattern. God blesses His people before He removes the danger. Look at this:
The Israelites ate the first Passover meal while the Egyptian army was still armed, Pharaoh was still in power and the Red Sea stoll stood between them and freedom. Yet God told His people to sit down together and eat. His deliverance was already at work.
Paul and Silas were singing hymns while they were behind bars, still fastened in stocks. Before the earthquake came, they had already found peace in the presence of God.
Then, Jesus gathered with His disciples around a table on the night before His crucifixion. He shared the bread and the cup knowing exactly what they represented: His blood and execution. The cross was directly ahead of behind Him yet there was perfect peace at the table as He talked about love and forgiveness.
God gives peace while the enemy is watching.
How many times have you thought, “I’ll have peace when this problem is solved,” or “I’ll be able to rest once this burden is over.” Psalm 23 challenges that way of thinking.
God’s peace doesn’t wait until life becomes easy. It’s available in the middle of the valley, at a table prepared by the Shepherd.
That’s the model David gives us. The Shepherd is never anxious so His sheep breathe easier.
Philippians 4:6-7
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Are you waiting for things to improve before you rest in God’s goodness? Sit down at the table He has prepared. The enemies may still be present, but they can’t cancel God, silence Him or steal the peace He gives. He is giving them a chance to see how faithfully He cares for us.
He turns our enemies into spectators. They are present, but powerless to interrupt what God is doing.
