Psalm 23:4 — “…I will fear no evil…”
Before we can understand why David does not fear evil, we have to understand what evil actually is. We live in a time when the definition is constantly changing. What one generation calls wrong, another celebrates.
So who decides? Who has the authority to define good and evil?
Adam and Eve lived in a world where good and evil were not confusing. God established what was right and it would bring life while evil would bring destruction.
Then came the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The issue with the tree was never about the fruit. It was about authority: deciding for ourselves what’s good and evil. We rejected God’s definition.
Humanity’s first sin was not just breaking a rule. It was rejecting God’s right to make the rules.
That same struggle wreaks havoc in the church today. Every believer eventually faces the temptation to redefine what God has already defined.
Truth becomes something each of us creates for ourselves.
Morality changes with our feelings.
Sin is a “personal expression” of freedom or identity.
Justice is no longer based on God’s righteousness but on human wants and desires.
This is exactly what the Isaiah warned about: “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness.” (Isaiah 5:20)
His warning was not that people would do evil things. He was warning that people would become so spiritually confused that they would lose the ability to recognize evil at all.
Sheep don’t determine the path. They trust the Shepherd. That is the picture of faith.
We live in a world filled with competing voices telling us what is good, true and acceptable. But we are not left without guidance. His Word reveals His character. His Truth establishes our foundation. His Voice leads us through a world where many paths appear right.
The danger for the sheep is believing that we know better than the Shepherd. Every believer must answer the same question asked in Eden:
Will we trust God’s definition of good and evil, or will we create our own?
We do not follow the changing opinions of the world. We are led according to eternal Truth.
