Day 14: Quiet

Psalm 23:2 — “…beside quiet waters.”

Why quiet waters?

The Hebrew word means “waters of rest” or “repose.” The emphasis isn’t so much on silence but on peace. These are waters where the sheep can drink without fear, where they can pause, recover and be refreshed.

Sheep are timid. A rushing stream would frighten them. Even if they desperately needed water they wouldn’t drink if they sensed danger. A wise shepherd would lead them to calm and peaceful waters.

God knows that you and I need more than just truth—we need a heart and mind that are at peace enough to receive it.

We think of God speaking most clearly in the loud moments of life: the mountaintop experiences, the miraculous answers to prayer, the great victories of faith. But, more often He speaks in the quiet.

Elijah learned that. God wasn’t in the earthquake or the fire but in “a still small voice” (1 Kings 19:12). He learned to listen in the stillness.

Our lives are rarely still. We fill every moment with noise. The TV hums in the background. Notifications demand our attention. Even when all goes quiet, our minds still race. The Shepherd is there to lead His sheep to waters of rest.

Jesus said: “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you...” (John 14:27)

Notice He didn’t promise the absence of noise and storms. He promised His presence in them.

A lake at sunrise has a quiet beauty. The surface is like glass, reflecting the sky with stunning clarity. But even a gentle breeze disturbs the water and the reflection is broken.

Think of your heart like that. When we are agitated by fear, anger or anxiety, it becomes difficult to see God’s hand at work. But when the Shepherd quiets our souls, we begin to see Him more clearly than ever before.

Philippians 4:6-7

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

When was the last time you allowed your soul to become quiet before God? The Shepherd still leads His sheep to waters of rest. The greatest need in your life today is a quieter heart in which to hear Him.
