Cookies (by Justin Vance of Calvary Baptist Church)

In 2009 I was nearing the end of my tour in Iraq. At the time, my platoon shared a tent together. The one thing that was heavy on all our minds was home. Care packages from loved ones were limited, but always a welcome sight.

One time I was sent cookies, which is an important part of this story. Everywhere I went I always took my Bible with my gear. It was just a part of my daily routine, even if I could only read a verse or two. One day I was gearing up to go on guard duty, and I had the cookies laid out on a makeshift table next to my cot. Before heading out, I put my Bible on top the of cookies and grabbed my gear. When I came back into the tent, another soldier explained to me how I really messed up his day. Puzzled, I asked what he was talking about. He said, he really wanted to steal some of the cookies, but every time he went over there, he saw that Bible sitting there. Knowing he would have to move the Bible out of the way to steal a cookie, drove him crazy, and he just couldn’t bring himself to do it.

Of course, I laughed out loud when he told me this and then offered him one. But it is one of those memories I will never forget.

Conviction can be a powerful thing. I didn’t plan to use my Bible as an anti-theft device, but God worked out another opportunity to bring Him glory anyway. Isn’t it amazing that God often uses us even when we are unaware?

That’s what it means to be an ambassador for Christ. To always be about Our Father’s business. There is no “clocking out” when it comes to being a Christian. The best part is that it’s Christ’s work through us.

Aren’t you glad God lets us be a part of bringing the Gospel to the world. Let us seek opportunities to brag on Our Mighty Savior! Pray for opportunities to speak to people and show the love of Christ to the world around us. Even if its something as simple as a cookie.

1 Cor 3:9

For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building.
