Come and See… (by Tim Klink of Prison Discipleship Ministry)

John 1:38-39

Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, “What seek ye?” They said unto Him, “Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest Thou?” He saith unto them, “Come and see”. They came and saw where He dwelt, and abode with Him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.

Notice that it was Jesus who asked the question, “What seek ye?” of the two that were already following Him. As followers of Christ, He often asks us the same thing. The disciples who were following Jesus asked where He dwelt, and in our hearts we often ask the same question. “Where is Jesus in this that I am going through?” And to that Jesus always replies, “Come and see.”

For the two that followed Jesus to have their request answered, they had to continue to follow Him, and when they did, they were rewarded with the answer. What if they had decided not to continue to follow Him, and simply resign themselves to an unanswered question? Had they not kept their eyes on Jesus as He led them, they would have missed the blessing of abiding with Him in an even greater, more personal manner.

When we ask questions of God, His answer will always be, “Come and see” which requires us to stay close to Him. The path He leads us on may be filled with rocks and swamps, and we begin to wonder if finding the answer is worth the journey. The journey becomes more difficult, and more confusing than we want, but we need to remember that if we are going to see Jesus in it, we must continue to follow Him, and not our own understanding.

Had the two decided that since it was the “tenth hour” that they needed to go home and do other things instead of continuing, they would have only added to their confusion regarding where Jesus dwelt. When we give up on trying to see Jesus in our trials, we only become confused. The disciples followed faithfully, and their reward was that “they came and saw where He dwelt.”
