Better Than Instant (by Tim Klink of Prison Discipleship Ministry)

Psalm 19:14

Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in Thy sight, O LORD, My Strength, and My Redeemer.

We live in an era that is so fascinating when it comes to communication. We carry a very small device in our pockets that has the capability of reaching out to anyone in the world in a matter of seconds. I recently was at a friends house who is contact with a lady in Ecuador that does the translation work on some of my books. As my friends and I talked about the book being translated, they said, “Let’s just call her.”

Within a matter of seconds we were not only talking to her but we were looking at each other over our phones. And then as we talked, her dad appeared in the picture and I was introduced to him as well.

But our connection did take measurable time, and there was a process involved in making the right connection. The proper sequence of numbers had to be entered into the phone. It also had to be set to “Facetime” for everything to work properly. As we talked back and forth, there was a slight lag time in the conversation. While it was fast, it wasn’t like being face to face. Communication has come a long way since the days of the crank phone hanging on the kitchen wall.

However, there is a communication that is even better, faster, and greater than the greatest technology man is capable of. That is the communication between man and the God of all things. There is no proper sequence of numbers that must be entered, there is no lag time, the call is never dropped or distorted, and while it is not exactly face to face, it is even better in that it is heart to heart, and thought to thought. Our communication with God through the Holy Spirit is true “real time.”

Prayer is so much more than formally asking God for stuff. Prayer is communicating every thought we have to the One who loves us unconditionally in the moment that we think it. What are you thinking about right now and throughout the day? Are you thinking about God's Word, and His holiness, or simply about you?
