Bathsheba: Blessed By God

It’s been a little disturbing reading about the life of Bathsheba, so far, hasn’t it? Wouldn’t you like to hear some good news about her? Well, this is your lucky day! Let’s dig in!

After the death of the first child, Bathsheba had another son. She would name him Solomon, and the Lord would express His love for him by giving him the additional name of Jedidiah, “Loved By God”. (2 Sam 12:24–25).

Bathsheba would earn a place of honor in David’s palace, eventually becomes an advocate for Solomon’s kingship (1 Kings 1), showing agency, wisdom, and courage.

Her position of respect and honor was illustrated by the way David treated her when she entered his presence in 1 Kings 2:19. The powerful king would rise and bow before her which was not typical behavior for kings toward women—even wives. That suggests she gained stature and influence throughout the kingdom, culminating in her masterful role in positioning her son as the next King.

Perhaps the most important indication of God’s hand of blessing on Bathsheba’s life, however, comes in the Gospel of Matthew:

Matthew 1:6

“Jesse was the father of David the king. David was the father of Solomon by Bathsheba who had been the wife of Uriah.”

Her faithfulness to God and her astute presence in the household of David earned her the amazing honor of being mentioned in the lineage of the Savior of the World!

Bathsheba lived a life marked by grief and trauma but her resilience and wisdom assured that she would be more than a footnote in David’s failure. She was:

A woman caught in a power imbalance.

A grieving widow and mother.

A survivor who became a key figure in Israel’s royal history and Messianic line.

All of this suggests a woman of quiet strength and endurance who found her place, gave birth to the great temple builder - and wisest man in the world - and took a place in redemptive history as an honored and blessed woman.
