The Acts Of Worship - Sing Again (Part 1)
1 Chronicles 16:23
“Sing to the LORD, all the earth.”
It’s noteworthy that singing plays such a prominent role in this passage because worship, really, is at its best when men and women are singing to their Lord with gusto. And, it’s so interesting to note that we are told to sing right after we are told to remember Him.
God’s church sing me hymns. Hymns are the key to worship. I’m not talking about musical styles or structure. I’m talking about what a hymn is all about. Singing hymns is about engraining the great doctrines of God into our minds and hearts.
There are hymns in the Bible. No, not the Psalms, although many would qualify. There are a number of passages in the New Testament that appear to be the early hymns of the church. You see, before there was a New Testament, the church leaders had to find a way to teach believers how to remember what they believe about God.
Pliny, governor of Bithynia looked into the habits of the Christians in his region and recorded that they met before daylight on a fixed day of the week and sang “in alternate verses a hymn to Christ, as to a god”.
Tomorrow, we’ll look at some of those earliest hymns and what they accomplished.
Acts 16:25
“But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God…”
