14 Reasons Jesus Went To The Cross - To Cover Our Sins
• Justification gives us a new legal standing before God.
• Propitiation solves the wrath problem.
• Atonement covers sin and restores our relationship with God.
• Redemption frees us from our slavery to sin.
When Jesus went to the cross, He not only justified us, but He also took our place as God’s wrath was poured out. He took that wrath upon Himself:
Matthew 27:46
About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?” that is, “MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?”
God’s anger was turned away from you and me as Jesus took the full wrath of God upon Himself. He took the place of the sacrificial Passover Lamb in order to satisfy God’s holy wrath. Jesus gave Himself to save you and I from that horrible fate.
1 John 4:10
“In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”
That act of sacrifice then allowed the blood of Jesus to accomplish two things: atonement and redemption. When His shed blood turned away the wrath of God, it paved the way for God to atone us (reconcile us to Himself) and redeem us (purchase us back from the world.)
Atonement is God looking at His sinful creation and saying this:
Hebrews 10:16-17
“‘This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days’, says the Lord: ‘I will put My laws upon their heart and on their mind I will write them.’ He then says, ‘And their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.’”
At its heart, atonement is “at-one-ment”. It is the process of God and mankind be coming one, again, so God’s grace and mercy can return us to our Creator. How did this happen on the cross? The blood of Jesus covers the sins of mankind allowing us to be in the presence of a pure and holy God.
